(Riverton, WY) – There were a lot of buses in town beginning late Thursday morning, 45 from various high schools around the state, to be exact. They brought 370 girls to Riverton High School for the annual Ron Thon Memorial Wrestling Tournament. Action on six mats on Thursday, with the medal round starting Friday morning, had Wolverine Gym rocking.
Fremont County had 10 girls placed in the top six paced by Shoshoni sophomore Peyton Arnhold was a close second at 105 pounds.
Arnhold advanced to the finals with a pin over Ella Godwin of Laramie, another pin over Harley Tillett from Lovell, and an 8-5 decision over Star Valley’s Carless Angell before meeting Rylin Plant in the final. She lost the gold to Plant by a 9-4 decision.
Also placing at 105 was Lander’s Taylor Freeman with a sixth-place finish. She opened with a pin of Green River’s Kaylee MacLagne but ran into eventual champion Rylin Plant and was pinned in the second period at 3:34. Entering the consolation bracket, she pinned Nalani Langi from Kelly Walsh, scored a major decision over Saiger Erickson of Kemmerer 15-2, then she decisioned Lovell’s Harley Tillett, followed by a 13-6 decision over Powell’s Avery LeBlanc. She was decisioned by Penelope Anderson of Saratoga 10-4 and finally pinned by Cerenity Quintana from Worland in the fifth-place match at 2:43.
At 100 pounds, Riverton’s Haille Cooper was third, and Cassidy Shaffer from Lander was sixth.
Cooper won her first two rounds by pin over Brooke Harper of Rock Springs and Valerie Forgery from Natrona County, then pinned Erin McMullan of Green River at 3:11 in the quarterfinals. She lost to Ellie Bouzia of Campbell County by pin in the semi-finals. In the consolation semi-final, she pinned Lander’s Cassidy Shaffer, then decisioned Caydee Eden from Powell 8-5 for the third-place medal.
Shaffer pinned Kiele Harmeyer of Douglas to open the tournament, then won a hard-fought 8-7 decision over Mailie Snell of Pinedale in the second round. She was pinned by Kemmerer’s Riley Meyer in the quarterfinals, then picked up another tight decision of Natalie Mendoza of Rawlins, 4-2, before running into Cooper. She was pinned by Kelly Walsh’s Michelle Henman in the fifth-place match.
Wind River’s Lily Hill didn’t waste much time on the mat in taking fifth place at 120. She pined Naomi Nielsen of Wheatland to open the tournament at 1:59, then pinned Mountain View’s Bentlee Aimone in 32 seconds. She lost to Chloe Collins of Thunder Basin by pin at 1:50 then picked up three quick pins. Hyla King of Natrona County in 34, Naomi Nielsen again, this time in 22 and Searney O’Brian of Sheridan in 29 seconds. She took fifth place by forfeit over Chloe Collins.
Riverton’s Autumn Osborne was third at 135. She pinned Cheyenne East’s Nicole Sanford, then picked up two more pins over Karlie Balfanz of Campbell County and McKayla Lynn of Mountain View in a match tied at 3-3. She dropped a semi-final match to Zuri Saunders from Chyenne Central, then scored two more pins over Joceyln Shanz of Green River and a second pin of Lynn of Mountain View for third.
At 145, Elizabeth Gribowskas of Lander was fifth. She opened with a bye, then pinned Lucia Varela of Lyman. She was decisioned by Halley House from Cheyenne East 12-8 and moved to the consolation bracket. She pinned Settelly Roberts of Star Valley, then pinned Haylee Blomberb from Campbell County after trailing 16-6. He met Halley House again, and this time Gribowskas took the close decision 10-7. She took fifth by forfeit.
Two Fremont County girls placed at 170 pounds, led by Shoshoni’s Maddi Ramage with a fourth-place finish and Lander’s Harlie Velarde, who had to forfeit her final two matches and took sixth.
Ramage opened by pinning Cheyenne Marshall of Thunder Basin but was pinned by Izzabella Strumskey from Green River. She pinned her next two opponents, Lillian Gonzalez of East and Julia Skinner from Moorcroft before picking up a forfeit over Velarde. In the third place match she lost a close 4-2 decision to Sophie Meyer from Wheatland.
Velarde pinned Fiona Stahlbaum of Riverton to open the tournament, then pinned Natalia Moschonas-Reyes of Campbell County, followed by a pin of Izzabella Strumsky from Green River. She was pinned by Ashten Hubbs of Cody in the semi-finals and was unable to finish the tournament.
Aleah Marquez was third for Riverton, and Juana Hines of Wind River was fifth at 235.
Marquez opened with a technical fall 19-4 over Stormy Tatro of Kelly Walsh, then pinned Abigail Clay of East before being pinned by Fatima Mata from Pinedale. Marquez pinned Hines in the consolation semi-final, then pinned Cathryn Reimer from Torrington for third.
Hines had an opening round bye but was pinned by Cathryn Reimer of Torrington in the second round. She pinned Melany Estrada of Thunder Basin and Kaelin Bates of Sheridan before running into Marquez. She pinned Abigail Clay of East for fifth.
