(Lander, WY) – The new manager of the Riverton Branch Library offered her first monthly report to the Fremont County Library Board last week since starting in the position July 1.
In the report, Cindy Wright described herself as a Cheyenne native and University of Wyoming graduate with 30 years of experience as a teacher and librarian for various schools, libraries, and countries.
Most recently, she worked as a teaching librarian at the American School of Doha in Qatar, according to minutes from the March 18 meeting of the Fremont County Commission, when Wright’s hire was announced.
“For us in a small town to get (a) background like that is phenomenal,” Fremont County Library Board Chair Perry Cook said during last week’s meeting. “We’re pretty excited.”
Wright – who has “strong family ties” in Riverton, according to the Commission meeting minutes – expressed excitement in her report, too, sharing plans to “continue (the) Riverton Branch Library’s services and ensure that they meet the needs of all members of our diverse community.”
“I am committed to creating an inclusive, welcoming space and look forward to fostering deeper connections with residents, helping them access the resources they need to thrive,” she wrote. “I believe my passion for education and library services will bring a new energy to the Riverton Branch as we continue to strengthen our role as a central hub for learning, creativity, and connection.”
The Riverton Branch is “a great place to be,” she told the Library Board last week, highlighting “the many ways our library is a vital, interactive presence in the Riverton community.”
For example, Wright said she has already seen patrons come to the library to apply for jobs online, create resumes, attend virtual interviews and meetings, and stay in contact with loved ones.
“For many of our patrons, our library is the only stable internet connection they have access to,” she noted in her report.
Others see the library’s printing and scanning services as “necessities” that they can use to print out and submit Medicare forms, legal forms, “and even tickets to concerts,” Wright said.
The library is also “a place for creative expression,” she continued, offering writing groups, art activities, and other exhibits and programs featuring Wyoming wildlife, authors and photographers.
“Finally, we are a place to cool down in the summer, a place to find peace in a loud, stressful world, and in some cases, a place where some don’t have to be alone,” she said. “This breadth of services is a reflection of our commitment: to be here for everyone, in ways both expected and surprising. Our work is usually understated and subtle—but it is constant, meaningful, and deeply appreciated by the people we serve.”
