(Riverton, WY) – The Riverton Middle School restaurant night returns May 13th from 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
What was an annual project for RMS students for many years eventually disappeared in 2010. Thanks to the hard work of the entire RMS staff including Principal, Aziz Waheed and addition of Family & Consumer Science instructor, Karla Kucera in 2023, the restaurant returned.
Each year, 8th grade students have the opportunity to pick a restaurant theme, research the types of jobs available in the industry and apply for one. They create a resume, interview with a business professional from the community and are eventually placed into various jobs. Weeks of preparation follows; designing a menu, decorating, taking reservations, etc.
On the night of the event students work long hours hosting community guests, preparing food in the kitchen, entertaining patrons, taking orders and assuring diners have a first class experience… all from 13-14 year-olds.
The 2025 restaurant is themed, “Rollin’ on the River” as a tribute to Mississippi River culture with an emphasis on southern cuisine. The menu is set to feature pot roast po-boys, jambalaya, a vegetarian option and a kids menu. Pro tip – save room for peach cobbler or Mississippi mud pie! Under the direction of Mrs. Kucera’s vast culinary experience, virtually every single thing involved in the meal is homemade.
In 2023, the RMS project returned with “McGriddies,” which was a junkyard theme (think Sanford’s.) 2024 took a totally bodacious blast from the past with an ’80’s theme.
Students serve an estimated 700 hungry customers each year. All of the money made from guests is put toward the next year’s restaurant project for future 8th graders.
