Lander junior Adelyn Anderson didn’t waste any time shattering the all-class state record in the shot put. In her preliminary flight, she threw 49-7.75, breaking a 15-year-old record held by Bailey Gibson. Anderson set the Class 3-A record last year. She now has the best throw ever made in the event at the state meet.
Teammate Daegen Reinhardt took seventh, and the Lady Tigers scored a dozen points in the event.
Over on the track, freshman Dorothy Jensen ran to second place in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:27.43, senior Ameya Eddy was close behind in third with an 11:28.74.
Lander sophomore Paisley Hollingshead won the high jump, clearing 5-5.
As a team, the Lady Tigers are in a strong position to challenge for the state title with 36 points in three events after opening day.
There were no other champions from Fremont County on Thursday, but in Class 1-A, Wesley Underwood of Fort Washakie was 8th in the 3200 in 11:07.02, and Ashdon Eagleroad from Western Heritage Lutheran Academy threw 124-3 in the discus, also an eighth-place finish.
In the Class 2-A 3200 meter run, Wyoming Indian’s Dai’Onna Posey was fourth in 12:44.84, and Olivia Remacle from Wind River was fifth at 13:12.21. Wyoming Indian’s Marysa Trumbull finished eighth with a time of 13:37.73
Shoshoni freshman Sawyer Arnhold finished sixth in the long jump with a season best of 16-1.
For the Chiefs, Kaiden Moss finished seventh in the 3200 at 10:48.07.
Shoshoni’s boys placed seventh in the sprint-medley relay. Landon Kasper, Erik Mogensen, Justice Miller, and Damion Knigge ran to a time of 4:07.66.
The Lander Tigers placed in three events. Logan Milek was fifth in the 3200 in 10:16.80. The Tiger sprint-medley team of Brayden Baker, Noah Hoyt, Jaxson Balzly, and Logan Heller ran to seventh place in 3:58.01, and Derik Ingwerson threw 47-6.75 to finish fourth in the shot.
Riverton’s only points on opening day came with a runner-up finish by junior Kayden Liebrecht in the discus with a throw of 149-11.
Records fell across the running and field events on Thursday. A good example of the competitiveness of this year’s state meet came in the Class 4-A 3200 meter run.
Riverton senior Davian Spoonhunter ran in an excellent time of 9:51.39, one of the best marks ever by a Wolverine distance runner, and placed 11th. Jase Burton of Star Valley set a new all-class record in the event with a blistering time of 9:16.08.
