(Queens, NY) – For the first time since 2015, the New York Mets are in the National League Championship Series. One of the pieces that’s helped the 2024 Mets make a great playoff run came to Queens, New York from over 1,700 miles away in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Former Cheyenne Post Six baseball star, Brandon Nimmo has been with the organization since 2017. From 2017 to 2021 Nimmo has battled a variety of injuries shortening his quick but productive seasons. In 2020, a global pandemic was to blame. Brandon bounced back and played in 151 of the Mets 162 games in 2022, in 2023 he played 136 games, starting most of them. This season, Nimmo became one of only sixteen Mets to hit at least 100 home runs for the squad. He’s also became a fan favorite, not just in the Cowboy State.
The Mets rallied to beat Atlanta on the last day of the regular season to clinch a playoff spot. They’d quickly fly from Georgia to Wisconsin for a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers. In dramatic fashion, New York beat the Brew Crew in a 4-2 comeback game three win to move on in the playoffs. After the game, Nimmo was spotted in the locker room with some tears in his eyes.
“I haven’t told anyone this yet, but I lost my grandmother about an hour before the game,” he explained to reporters. “What it puts in perspective is that you can’t take any of this with you when you’re gone, and the moments like these, the experiences like these, this is what life is all about.”
His team wasn’t done, they knocked off the National League’s second-seeded Philadelphia Phillies in four games of a five game set to advance to the National League Championship Series this week.
New York will take on the winner of Friday’s nights Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres match-up. Game one of the NLCS starts Sunday, October 13th.
