(Dubois, WY) – The interim superintendent the Dubois School Board hired last month for the 2026-2027 school year is going to start his job sooner than previously anticipated.
The school board voted this week to amend Dan Schmidt’s interim superintendent employment contract so that he can begin service on May 11 instead of July 1.
They also voted to release Superintendent Annette G. Walters from her duties effective May 31, subject to the district fulfilling their remaining obligations of her contract.
“The board and Dr. Walters have reached a mutual agreement to conclude her service with the district effective May 31, with the remaining terms of her contract to be honored,” Board Chair Tracey Nguyen said after the votes were completed during a regular meeting Tuesday. “We appreciate Dr. Walters’ service to the district and her cooperation in supporting a smooth and orderly transition, (and) we appreciate Mr. Schmidt’s willingness to step into this role early to support the district during this time of transition.”
This week’s actions “reflect a coordinated approach to leadership during transition and at a critical time for our district,” Nguyen said, explaining that, in the coming weeks, Fremont County School District 2 will be focused on “key priorities, including organizational recalibration, development of the budget for the upcoming school year, preparation for our upcoming peer review conducted by the Wyoming Department of Education as well as compliance with the Wyoming State Board of Education Chapter 3 rules.”
“The board believes it is in the best interest of the district for incoming leadership to be directly engaged in that work as early as possible to ensure continuity and alignment,” she said. “The board remains focused on maintaining stability for our students and staff while positioning the district for a strong start to the next school year.”
The board also approved a Special Education Director contract for Schmidt for the 2026-2027 school year beginning May 11, 2026.
