Yellowstone National Park officials have launched an investigation after a photo was posted online via a drone over one of the park’s geothermal features.
Drones are banned in Yellowstone and many other national parks.
The National Park Services says that drones can potentially harass wildlife and affect the park’s features. Flying a drone in Yellowstone results in a penalty of up to six months in jail and up to a $5,000 fine. A banishment from the park is also possible.
In 2014, a Dutch tourist crashed a drone into the Grand Prismatic Spring. The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports that this drone photo was taken over the same feature.
