As kids head back to school, Wind River Family & Community Health Care is here to make sure they’re healthy, ready, and supported every step of the way.
Start the school year strong with sports physicals and well-child visits—essential check-ins that keep students safe, on track with growth milestones, and cleared to participate in school sports. These visits are quick, convenient, and a great way to catch any health concerns early.
Looking for support beyond the doctor’s office? The Youth Wellness Center is open and making a big impact. Located in the Keel Gym at St. Stephens, this vibrant hub welcomes all students enrolled in any Fremont County school—not just enrolled tribal members. Kids can stop in for recreation, basketball, tutoring, storytelling with elders, cooking classes, laser tag, and more. There’s a computer lab for homework, meals to keep them fueled, and staff who care. Right now, the center is open Monday–Friday from 8 to 5, but once school begins, hours will shift to 3:30–7:30 pm to better serve kids after class.
And there’s more to come: a new Youth Wellness Center will be under construction across from the Wind River Hotel & Casino—making it even easier for students to access. Transportation for students is hopefully on the horizon. This would ensure that any student who wanted to attend the center could, regardless of circumstance.
The School-Based Program makes it easier than ever for students to get the care they need—without ever leaving school grounds. Wind River Cares partners with schools across Fremont County, including Riverton, Fort Washakie, Arapahoe, St. Stephens, Wyoming Indian, Wind River, and WRITC Eastern Shoshone & Northern Arapaho Head Start. Students can access check-ups, immunizations, vision screenings, behavioral health services, chronic condition management, and more with the mobile health unit—all while staying in class and on track.
Just this past May, St. Stephen’s students received vision exams and glasses through the program. To participate, parents or guardians must give consent. Schools will send home forms for families to complete and return. It’s convenient, trusted care delivered where kids need it most. From minor health concerns to ongoing support, this program helps kids stay in the classroom and thrive.
