(Wyoming) – In many of the recent years, weather data has proven that the Cowboy State / Equality State was also the “Windiest State.” In 2025 however, we no longer hold that crown!
County 10 was blown away to learn that there are two states more windy than us according to new data revealed by World Population Review.
Over the last 12 months, Wyoming’s average wind speed was calculated at 20.9 mph. That is just a tad below Montana at 21 mph and the new wind-blown champions… South Dakota, coming in at an average of 21.3 mph.
Our Rocky Mountain neighbors, Idaho and Colorado also rank in the top five windiest places in the United States. Despite the slight dip in overall wind-rankings, it’s probably no surprise that Wyoming is still considerably gustier than most areas. The least-wind blown state this last year was Delaware with an average speed of 12.9 mph. Least-windy states also included California, Louisiana, Connecticut, and Hawaii.
In 2023 Cowboy State Daily did a piece about the wind here. Meteorologist Don Day explained, “First, there’s the mountainous terrain. Wyoming is uniquely situated compared to other Western states since it’s mountainous but not continuously mountainous. Day continued in the Cowboy State Daily article, “The biggest gaps between the major mountain ranges is Wyoming,” he said. “You don’t have continuous mountains. You have a mountain range, a gap, another mountain range, and another gap. Those gaps really funnel the wind.”
