In the Wyoming Legislature this week, a bill has been introduced that would legalize the use of medical marijuana. House Bill 278 was introduced and is sponsored by Republican House Majority Floor Leader Eric Barlow of Gillette.
According to the Casper Star-Tribune, the bill will not provide wholesale legalization of medical marijuana, but rather establish a regulated system for distribution and control.
State lawmakers have been opposed to legalizing marijuana for the last several years. Opponents have pointed out the lack of research-based evidence of any medicinal benefits.
Proponents argue that the drug is a better alternative than many opioid pain relievers for patients.
Due to time constraints of the current legislative session, whether or not the bill gets any debate is in jeopardy at this point.
