The Wyoming Senate has officially killed a bill that would have increased fines for those convicted of animal cruelty.
Currently, the law states that animal cruelty is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $750.
Aggravated cruelty to animals is a felony and punishable by up to a $5,000 fine. The bill to raise fines was proposed by Democratic Sen. Mike Gierau of Jackson and would have increased the maximum fines for animal cruelty to $2,500 and $10,000 respectively.
According to a Casper Star-Tribune report, the proposal was defeated Tuesday on a 21-7 vote. Many cited not voting for the bill after concerns it would not achieve its objective.
