House Bill 145 has been introduced into the Wyoming Legislature, which proposes a repeal of the death penalty.
Republican Rep. Jared Olsen of Cheyenne and Republican Sen. Brian Boner of Douglas are the main sponsors of the bill.
An Associated Press release says the bill would leave life in prison without parole as the most severe penalty available.
According to Olsen, the death penalty is costly and ineffective. He said that the state public defenders office currently spends about $750,000 per year in taxpayer money on capital cases.
The state of Wyoming has not used the death penalty in 27 years and there are currently no inmates on death row.
