(Fremont County, WY) – The Bureau of Land Management Wind River Bighorn Basin District tentatively plans to burn slash piles within the Cody, Lander and Worland field office areas this fall and winter.
These pile burns help clear out leftover branches and debris from earlier forest thinning work, reducing wildfire risk and supporting healthier forest conditions.
Pile burning will proceed only when on-site fuel moisture and weather conditions are suitable for safe and effective treatment. Smoke may be visible from nearby areas during the burn and for several days afterward as the slash material continues to smolder.
These projects may be conducted from mid-November through April in the following locations:
Cody Field Office:
- Rattlesnake Mountain: Approximately 150 acres of piles will be targeted 11 miles northwest of Cody on Rattlesnake Mountain.
Lander Field Office:
- Green Mountain: Approximately 220 acres of piles will be targeted about 10 miles southeast of Jeffrey City on the north slope of Green Mountain along the Green Mountain Road (BLM 2411).
- Copper Mountain: Approximately 50 acres of piles will be targeted 16 miles northeast of Shoshoni and east of the Birdseye Pass Road.
Worland Field Office:
- Ten Sleep: Approximately 354 acres of piles will be treated 5 to 12 miles east of Ten Sleep in the Sand Draw, Jacobs Creek, and Rome Hill areas.
