(Riverton, WY) – A bomb squad had to be called to investigate after a Riverton boy found what he thought were toy hand grenades he happened upon while walking along the Wind River, which turned out to be live hand grenades, according to a post shared on the Riverton Police Department Facebook page Thursday morning, April 3.
“Shortly before 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening a 15 year-old Riverton boy came home to his E. Monroe address after walking along the Wind River and finding an old box,” the RPD Facebook post states.
“He opened the box and saw, what he believed, were toy hand grenades. The boy brought the box home and parents believed they were more than toys.”
The post goes on to inform that RPD officers responded to the home and “cordoned off a safe area after confirming with the Natrona County bomb squad that the items were not toys.”
The technicians then responded to the scene and safely removed the items, and the RPD states that no injuries were reported.
Police are now investigating how/why the devices were left near the river.
