(Riverton, WY) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Soroptimist International of Fremont County (formerly Soroptimist International of Riverton) wants people to be both aware and pro-active.
That mission takes the somewhat eye-opening form of hanging bras on the bridges at Riverton and Hudson. This is the third year for the project and with all the positve feedback from the community, members plan to continue getting the word out.
It’s a reminder that’s hard to miss; the bras are solicited from women in the community and the response is always overwhelming.
Women have told Soroptimist members that it reminds them to make an appoint for a mammogram. Others comment that they are survivors or have friends or family that have survived breast cancer. The Bras on the Bridge are a monument to that survival.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an international health campaign organized by major charities every Ocober to increase awareness of and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, treatment and cure.
In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. But there is hope. Advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase the chances of survival. When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%.
Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a global volunteer organization that works to ensure that women and girls have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential and live their dreams.
SI Riverton was chartered in 1974 and works locally on projects designed to meet that mission. The name was changed in 2023 to Soroptimist International of Fremont County to reflect the County-wide scope of the various programs.
