Think being on the LVHS Swim and Dive team is all work? The athletes found time this week to have some fun while still getting in their workouts and winning meets.
Thursday, Lander hosted a quad meet. Lander won the meet with a score of 417 with Riverton second at 360, followed by Evanston and Rawlins. The Tigers also gained another state qualifier as Cadence Hamilton earned a green parka when she completed her 200 Yard Freestyle swim in 2:32.19.
The four seniors on this year’s team were also honored for their dedication to the program. Brianna Else, Daegan Reinhardt, Kimilia Salway-Onehorn, and Katy Anderson walked out on deck with their parents as their favorite swim memories and future plans were read aloud. They exchanged hugs with their teammates before getting down to the business of the meet.
Individual event winners at the quad meet were: Cira Hampton (200 Yard IM, 100 Yard Backstroke), Katy Anderson (50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Breaststroke), Sara Kearns (100 Yard Butterfly), and Chayse Denton (500 Yard Freestyle). Lander also won the Medley Relay with the team of Brinlee Heller, Emily Plaisted, Katy Anderson, and Ang Rudd.
Others scoring points in individual events were: Sara Kearns, Emily Plaisted, Cadence Hamilton, Brinlee Heller, Iris Woltman, Eden Kemp, Vayda Havens, Chayse Denton, Ruby Johnson, Brooklyn White, Alaina Russell, Jojo Olssen, Brianna Else, Ang Rudd, Isabella Gallo, Daegan Reinhardt, and Ang Rudd. Athletes scored points at this meet by placing in the top twelve in an event with only four athletes per team allowed to score.
On Friday, the team held the special practice session termed “Pumpkin Relays”. The girls formed teams of four and competed in various special events such as the belly-flop, team motto, pumpkin decorating, corkscrew swimming, and the name-sake event. In the pumpkin relay event, each team member had to swim while keeping their pumpkin elevated out of the water. A good time was had by all, with more than one team member mentioning that this was the most fun event of the season.
On Saturday, Jackson came to town for the annual scramble meet. At this meet, two teams are formed (orange and green) with some members from both Jackson and Lander. The girls make new friends while still competing. The Orange team technically won 94 to 92, but really they were all winners.
Jackson boasts some very strong competition so it was notable that Lander athletes won several events at this meet. Individual event winners from Lander were: Vayda Havens (200 Yard Freestyle), Katy Anderson (50 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Butterfly), Brooklyn White (diving), Ang Rudd (100 yard Freestyle), Cira Hampton (100 Yard Backstroke), and Emily Plaisted (100 Yard Breaststroke). Additionally, several more Lander divers are improving and moving close to the qualifying mark for state, so keep an eye on that over the next few meets.
Head Coach Erik DeClue says, “The team is looking strong,[and] they are excited for the upcoming weekend [when they will] compete against all the 4A schools.” DeClue is assisted by Lyndsay Alcaraz and Greg Anderson.
The team is in action this week at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper on Friday. Saturday the largest meet of the year will take place in Laramie with both 3A and 4A teams getting a feel for the pool that will host the state meet in just a few short weeks.
