Central Wyoming College Rodeo
The Rustler Rodeo team held their first and only home rodeo competition this past weekend at Fremont County Fairgrounds, which ran from Friday, Sept. 20 to Sunday, Sept. 22.
“It is a lot of work producing our hometown rodeo, but well worth it. Especially when the team pulls together to make it happen and the majority of them make it to the Championship Short Round,” said Rodeo Head Coach Andrew Schrock, “We had 12 athletes competing for first place yesterday [Sunday] in front of our hometown crowd.”
Both the men’s and women’s rodeo teams had great showings from individuals. Jace Mayfield was the top performer for the CWC men, placing first in the average for Steer Wrestling, fifth in Team Roping, and seventh in Tie Down Roping. These finishes together won him the All-Around Champion title for the men’s Rodeo. After a first place finish in the long round, Bahmer Gaehring just barely missed out on first place in the Bull Riding short round, scoring second in the average. Caden Gines scored fifth in the average for Team Roping, Stran Williams placed sixth in the average for Steer Wrestling, and Colson Myers rounded out the CWC men’s top finishers, placing 11th in the average for Tie Down Roping.
Sydney Jones, Tricia Lammers, and Maylee Nordstrom each had their own successes for the Lady Rustlers. Nordstrom won the long round in Barrel Racing, but ended up in seventh in the average. It was Jones who had placed the highest (third overall) in Barrel Racing for the Lady Rustlers. Lammers had strong runs in Goat Tying, which earned her a respectable fourth place finish.
Schrock was very proud of how well his team performed, with hopes that his athletes can continue their hot streaks; “Overall the team is looking really good and showing a lot of poise when competing. We plan on taking this momentum into next weekend when we travel to Sheridan for the Pat Hamilton Memorial Rodeo.”
Volleyball
Brief & Strenuous. Two words that summed up this past weekend for Rustler Volleyball. A roadtrip across the state to Torrington, Wyoming to compete in the Wyo-Braska tournament hosted by Eastern Wyoming College on Sept. 20 & 21 provided challenging opponents for the Lady Rustlers.
Friday night pitted CWC in a formidable matchup against the Cougars of Western Nebraska CC. A five set match was the result of this slug-fest, with each set ending with no bigger than a four point score difference. Presley Ryan racked up 13 of her 35 kills for the tournament in this game, but it proved to not be enough. Even though Western Nebraska emerged victorious from this match, the Lady Rustlers showed great resilience through the adversity of this back and forth game.
Bright and early Saturday morning, the Lady Rustlers were ready to redeem themselves in their 9am match against Colorado Northwestern CC, and they did just that. The Lady Rustlers took out their frustrations built up in the previous game on the CNCC Spartans, with three straight sets of dominance (25-17, 25-16, 25-15). Fueled by an 11 kill, four ace serve performance from Presley Ryan, and Hallie Reeder pitching in 14 digs, CWC was not messing around.
The last match of the tournament was another frustrating one, this time CWC was paired up against the Trojans of Colorado, Trinidad State College. A promising first set score of 25-13 in favor of the Lady Rustlers almost seemingly continued the trend of Saturday morning’s match. But the next two sets (22-25, 18-25) in favor of the Trojans quickly brought CWC back down to earth. The Lady Rustlers ended up forcing the match to five sets, thanks to another multitude of ace serves and kills from Ryan (5 & 12 respectively), as well as a combined number of 40 total digs between Reeder, Rian Mckenzie and Brooklyn Coats. Trinidad walked out of the gym with the win, dropping CWC’s weekend record to 1-2.
Freshman Sarah Meservey, who tied for the second most kills (17) on the team during the Wyo-Braska tournament, had a positive outlook regarding the Lady Rustlers performance in the tournament, “I’m really proud of the way our team played this weekend. Even though we may not have gotten the outcome we wanted in some moments, we fought together as a team, building our unity can take us to the next step, preparing us to face our first region game weekend!”
Cross Country
Saturday, Sept. 21 the CWC Cross country team ran at the MSU Denver Roadrunner invitational at Washington Park in downtown Denver. The women ran 6 km and the Men ran 8 km. Kallee Cook had previous experience running a 6 km race her freshman year, but this was her first time running the extended distance this season. Cook fought through the higher elevation that Denver presented, and got close to her 6 km personal record. Both Zander Hinkley and Azaniah Guthrie both ran their first 8 km race, which is the distance runners will have to compete in at regionals. Coach Chatfield believed it was a great early season learning experience for both of them, that can hopefully be used to help qualify for regionals.
Livestock Judging
CWC livestock judging team competed in their second contest of the year at the Casper College Livestock Judging contest on Saturday, September 21. They had 10 classes of beef, sheep and hogs. The students gave reasons on eight of those classes.
Overall, the Rustlers placed sixth out of nine teams. Hallie Wilson placed the highest individually for CWC (16th), with Addison Wessels and Talon Thomas not too far behind in places (21st and 25th, respectively).
Men’s Soccer
The men’s Rustler soccer team were fortunate to host two home conference games this past Friday and Saturday. The first of which was against one of the top teams in Region IX men’s soccer: Otero College. The Rattlers looked every bit like the top-ranked men’s soccer teams they were, as the Rustlers let up two goals early on in the first half of the game. CWC had their own troubles finding the net against a fast-paced and well-orchestrated Otero team. Sophomore Pedro Belemont did lead the team with four shots, but none found the back of the net. The Rustlers surrendered a final score of 0-2, dropping their conference record to 1-2.
The second conference match of the two day homestand for the men’s soccer team ended much more favorably for CWC. Saturday’s opponent was Trinidad State College, who scored almost as soon as they walked off the bus, notching the first goal of the match in the third minute. But CWC’s Josh Bromwell was quick to eliminate any lead the Trojans were trying to hold. Bromwell tied the score at one apiece when he put the ball into the net with a beautiful cross and assist by Tanner Johnson. Bromwell then got what would turn out to be the game winning goal when he drove the ball into the net from a Pedro Belemont pass that somehow found its way after ricocheting off of several Trinidad defenders and Rustler players. The second half saw more scrappiness and feistiness from both sides than goals, but the Rustlers prevailed and narrowly held onto their 2-1 lead to secure their second conference win.
Women’s Soccer
Much like the CWC men’s soccer team, the women had their turn against Otero Junior College.
The Rustler women were eager to put the ball in the net, and led off their day scoring in the first six minutes of the match. Willow Aullman, freshman from Star Valley, WY, headed the ball into the net with Sienna Bodily providing the assist. Otero answered quickly and knotted up the score at 1-1 into halftime. In the second half, the CWC women found the net one more time when Rakiya King took a pass from Aullman and put it past the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, Otero was able to squeeze one more goal late in the game and held the Lady Rustlers from scoring before the end of the match, leading to a final score of 2-3.
Another conference opponent came out to play Saturday afternoon, this time it was Trinidad State College paying CWC a visit. The Lady Rustlers were in a complete feeding frenzy mode right from the jump. Freshman out of Scotland, Daisie Donegan pounded a long ball into the goal from 35 yards deep, with an assist from Sienna Bodily. The Lady Rustlers kept Trinidad’s goalkeeper busy all game, racking up almost 40 shots on goal the entire match. The second CWC goal was courtesy of Willow Aullman off an assist from Donegan. Scotland native Ellie McKay assisted Jersee Clapier for the third goal of the afternoon. Not more than a few minutes later, Kristen Moss had an unassisted goal. Ana Bernard, Donegan, Rakiya King and Clapier all added goals of their own in the second half, and Mia Boll wrapped up the historical scoring day for the Lady Rustlers when she bent the ball into the net off a corner kick with 11 minutes left in the match. The final score set a CWC women’s soccer school record of 9-1.
Golf
The men’s and women’s CWC golf teams continued Region IX tournament play when they traveled to Northeastern Junior College on Thursday and Friday, September 19 & 20.
The men’s team was able to put together two great days of golf, two sub-300 rounds. However, an insanely talented Eastern Wyoming College team and Otero College team that surprised everyone by taking first place in the tournament stole the spotlight from the amazing performances of the CWC men’s team, who were six strokes away from first place. With five out of the six athletes on the men’s roster being freshman, the Rustlers possess spoils of riches talent-wise for the future, which will hopefully involve competing for a Region IX title.
Isabell Salas and first place finishes are almost becoming synonymous at this point. Salas finished the tournament +22, with Tegan Halloran (4th) and Cheyenne Ward (7th) not far behind at all. Head Coach Mike Neuman believes that his ladies team has the potential and brilliance to be very successful, with their second place overall team placing proving Neuman’s words to be nothing but factual.
