RIVERTON, Wyo. — Central Wyoming College (CWC) will host its first High School Welding Competition on Tuesday, May 19, in the CWC Welding Shop, bringing together students from across the region for a hands-on, skills-based competition.
The event is designed to provide a fun and engaging environment for high school welding students of all experience levels, while also introducing them to career opportunities in welding and the skilled trades.
Students will compete in three divisions, beginner, intermediate, and advanced, with each level featuring welding challenges tailored to their experience. An additional oxy/fuel cutting competition will allow participants to showcase precision cutting skills.
“Events like this help students connect their skills to real career opportunities,” said Brittany Yeates, Dean of Business and Industry at Central Wyoming College. “It’s also a chance for them to experience the hands-on learning environment at CWC while exploring a future in welding and the trades.”
The competition also supports CWC’s involvement in the Metallica Scholars Initiative, a national workforce education program that provides training and resources to students pursuing careers in the trades.
“Our goal is to create something that’s both competitive and fun,” said Matt Dripps, Welding Instructor at CWC. “We want students at every level to feel welcome, challenge themselves, and leave excited about welding and the opportunities ahead.”
Prizes will be awarded in each competition level.
The event also serves as a way for prospective students to experience CWC’s welding facilities, meet instructors, and learn more about the college’s welding technology program.
High school welding students interested in participating are encouraged to register in advance.
