The defending state champion Wyoming Indian Chiefs had a solid effort at the Glenrock Tournament last weekend rolling to three straight wins before falling to Wright 90-80 in a shootout.
The Chiefs were challenged by host, Class 3-A Glenrock but won 65-61. They put the running clock on 1-A Kaycee 79-22 and handled Sundance 78-56 before entering the final game against Wright late Saturday afternoon.
“It was a good opening weekend for the teams, excited about the good things we did, but I’m glad I now have an idea what we need to get better at,” Wyoming Indian head coach Craig Ferris said. “All the guys are hungry and worked hard all weekend.”
In the opener against Glenrock, Heeyeiniitou Monroe-Black paced the Chiefs with 26 points.
Against Kaycee, Cordell Spoonhunter poured in 20 points and in the Sundance game it was Monroe-Black again with 24 points.
The high scoring tilt against Wright saw the Panthers open the game with 28 first period points and the Chiefs narrowly behind with 24.
It was a team scoring effort with four Chiefs in double-figures against the Panthers led by 24 points from Spoonhunter, Darian Augustine tallied 20, Parlayne Ferris added 17, and Monroe-Black 10.
The Chiefs host the annual Foothills Classic next weekend and have a rematch against Wright on the big floor at Alfred P. Redman Gym on Saturday.
