The Wyoming Indian Lady Chiefs moved their undefeated record to 16-0 Saturday and won the championship of the Girls Big Horn Basin Shootout tournament at Powell/Cowley. Just down the road at Worland/Thermopolis, the Chiefs defeated their cross-county rival Wind River Cougars for the championship on the boys side. It was the Chief’s first victory over Wind River in the past four seasons and the first of two more regularly scheduled contests between the two rivals this season, the second of which comes up Saturday evening at Ethete.
The Saturday contest will feature a special presentation between the girls and boys games when the gymnasium at WIHS will be renamed in honor of long-time coach Alfred Redman. “We’ve been working on doing this for some time now, and we’ll do it Saturday between the games,” said Wyoming Indian Schools Superintendent Owen St. Clair. “Alfred is responsible the run and gun offense that changed Wyoming high school basketball.”
Several of Redman’s teams set the bar for consecutive victories in the state with 55 straight wins over the 1983-86 seasons. That record was tied only two years ago by Pine Bluffs. Redman’s Chiefs teams won 426 games and lost 118 in 22 seasons and won six state championships. His teams finished as state runners-up six times, finished in third place twice and won the consolation championship a total of four times.
A graduate of Fremont County Vocational High School in Lander, Redman is a member of the FCSD#1 Hall of Fame. He is also in the Wyoming High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
