Pick your metaphor, the Chiefs were either a pack of hungry wolves stalking a wounded elk, or a school of ferocious piranha feeding on anything that tried to cross the backwater of some obscure Amazon tributary Saturday afternoon at Alfred P. Redman Memorial Gym in Ethete.
The Chiefs rolled over Southwest 2-A opponent Kemmerer 84-52, in a game that was much more lopsided than the score might indicate to move to 5-0 in league play.
The Chiefs hit 90 against Big Piney on Friday at home in a 90-4 runaway against the Punchers.
They have just Wind River remaining on their conference schedule next Thursday at home.
Wyoming Indian poured in 38 first period point in their best offensive quarter of the season. The Chiefs hit four first-period 3-pointers, led by senior Heeyei’Niitou Monroe-Black with a pair. Cordell Spoonhunter and Jordan Black each added a single trey.
Monroe-Black was on, the net barely moved as the ball tubed through the twine on his long-distance bombs.
Adriano Brown took care of the post work with three close-range shots in the opening period, and Mitchell C’Hair came off the bench to hit three post shots of his own.
It looked like the Chiefs might hit an improbable 75 points by the halftime buzzer, but they cooled off in the second period.
Cooled off is a relative term; if anyone else scored 25 points in a period, it might be a season high, but not at Wyoming Indian. The Chiefs led 63-34 at the half.
The running clock ensued early in the third period, with 7:24 remaining on the clock, on a follow shot by Monroe Black. The second half sped by via the running clock and the mercy rule.
Wyoming Indian head coach Craig Ferris was kind to Kemmerer, emptying his bench and rotating his reserves throughout the second half.
Kemmerer kept their starting five in the game, creating a score much closer than the final score indicated.
Monroe-Black had an impressive 25 points in just two-and-a-half quarters of play. Mitchell C’Hair had an entertaining 16 points, including a little floor dance when he was called for a blocking foul. Cordell Spoonhunter finished with a smooth dozen, and Jordan Black tallied 13, including an impressive three 3-point shots.
The Chiefs are once again Southwest 2-A champs and, like the girls, will most likely open with Fremont County rival Shoshoni at Wolverine Gym on Thursday at the West 2-A Regional in two weeks.
