Due to mild winter conditions and shallow frost depths, the City of Lander is advising residents that running water to prevent frozen pipes is not necessary at this time, and the City’s winter water allowance program is not currently in effect.
Current frost depths in City streets are approximately one foot, which does not pose a significant risk for frozen water service lines. As a result, residents do not need to run water to protect pipes under current conditions.
Because the water allowance program has not been implemented this winter, any additional water use will be billed at the customer’s normal rate. Customers are encouraged to use water responsibly.
The City of Lander actively monitors frost depths throughout the winter. If conditions change and frost levels deepen to the point where frozen pipes become a concern, the City will notify the public and provide clear guidance on when running water is recommended. At that time, information regarding any water allowance program will also be shared.
Property owners remain responsible for maintaining their water service lines up to the connection within the street. While the City’s water supply—sourced from the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River—remains cold during winter months, current ground conditions are not creating widespread risk.
