The City of Lander is providing an update on current water supply conditions and fire risk. At this time, there are no water restrictions or fire bans in place within Lander city limits. City staff are actively monitoring conditions and will continue to keep the public informed if circumstances change.
Water Supply Update
The City is closely tracking snowpack levels within the Townsend Creek watershed, which supplies Worthen Meadows Reservoir. In a typical year, snowpack in mid-May exceeds four feet, often requiring heavy equipment for access. This year, crews were able to reach the reservoir in early April with minimal snow removal, and monitoring sites have reported little to no remaining snowpack since that time.
While these conditions are different from average, it is still early in the season. Worthen Reservoir, the City’s backup municipal supply, is currently full, and late spring storms may provide additional moisture within the valley.
The City continues to manage its municipal water supply in coordination with other water users, in accordance with state law and established water rights. This collaboration helps ensure a balanced and sustainable use of available resources.
Although no restrictions are in place, the City encourages residents to practice routine water conservation. Simple steps—such as watering during cooler evening hours, reducing irrigation frequency, and limiting runoff—help support long-term water sustainability. As part of these efforts, residents may notice some adjustments in how City parks and public spaces are irrigated this season.
Fire Conditions Update
At this time, there is no fire ban in effect within Lander city limits. The Lander Volunteer Fire Department continuously monitors a range of factors when evaluating fire risk, including fuel conditions, weather patterns, fire activity, and available response resources. These indicators are reviewed year-round to ensure informed, timely decisions if conditions change.
