(Riverton, WY) – It lived up to its billing as the “unofficial state championship tournament” over the weekend. The Ron Thon brought teams from all four corners of the state, with the Cody Broncs emerging as the top squad with 206 points, 25 ahead of second-place Thunder Basin.
Fremont County had three wrestlers make the medal round in Shoshoni’s Brody Shepard, Lander’s Noah Irvine, and Weston McLauglin of Riverton. Shepard was fourth at 126 with Irvine, also at 126, and McLaughlin, 175, both placing fifth.
Shepard did it the hard way, losing his opening round match 3-1 to Wyatt Miller of Kemmerer. He put in a lot of time on the mat over the next two days. He pinned Russell Goolsbey of Powell in 2:47, scored a technical fall over Cokeville’s Raiden Pond 17-2 just 10 seconds into the second period, then tallied a major decision 14-4 over Nolan Hyde of Star Valley before running into a pair of familiar wrestlers. He decisioned Riverton’s Pryce Wigginton 6-5, then pinned Irvine at 2:43 to reach the third-place match. He dropped the match to Kemmerer’s Abel Jimenez 10-2.
Irvine’s path began with an 8-5 decision over Russell Goolsbey of Powell, and then he had a pair of wild, high-scoring matches.
He decisioned Abel Jimenez of Kemmerer 16-14, then lost to Maverick Gallup of Kelly Walsh 15-14, before meeting Shepard. In the fifth-place match, he scored a technical fall 17-1 over David Emery of Pinedale.
McLauglin opened with a pin of Riggen Austin from Laramie at 3:02. He decisioned Bridger Roberts from Evanston 12-7, before dropping his first match 11-4 to eventual champion Alex Sitz of Cody. Clay Teichert of Cokeville scored a technical fall 16-1, sending McLaughin to the sixth rather than the third-place match. In the fifth-place match, he built an 11-1 lead over Gabe Banister of Natrona County before pinning him at 4:56.
In the junior varsity division, Riverton’s Levi Gale won at 120 pounds, and Devan Clawson took gold at 144.
