(Douglas, WY) – Converse County Commissioner Robert Short announced his candidacy for Wyoming Secretary of State on Wednesday. The Glenrock High School graduate now resides in Douglas, where he has served as a Converse County commissioner since his election in 2014. As an entrepreneur with wide-ranging experience building and owning businesses that span energy, agriculture, retail, and tourism, he believes he is uniquely positioned to understand the economic challenges facing the state while protecting Wyoming’s business interests from bad actors both internally and externally.
Short has been elected to the Converse County Board of Commissioners three times. He credits his work ethic and ability to listen and collaborate for multiple achievements during his time as a commissioner, including building a new Justice Center in Douglas, investment in infrastructure, and increasing access to broadband and emergency services in remote areas of the county. Short also serves as the Vice President of the Wyoming County Commissioners Association, where he has taken an active leadership role in protecting Wyoming’s natural resource interests while building relationships with federal policymakers to improve outcomes for Wyoming residents.
“As a Wyoming Republican, I am deeply committed to the principles of smaller government, low taxes, free markets, and the Constitution. I hold an unshakable belief in helping people and have dedicated much of my life to service. The Secretary of State is charged with duties that first and foremost require an unwavering commitment to following rules that build trust, ensure fairness and accuracy, and promote accountability in our state, while always putting the best interest of Wyomingites first. My life and career are built on these principles and I live true to my word,” said Short.
Short is dedicated to upholding the full range of range of Constitutional and statutory responsibilities charged to the Secretary of State. A former election judge, he respects the integrity demonstrated by the county clerks, their staffs, and volunteers throughout Wyoming’s communities who endeavor to ensure fair, honest, and accurate elections.
“They stake their reputations on the integrity and fairness of the process and outcome, and in Wyoming that means everything.”
He is committed to ensuring Wyoming’s elections remain secure by striving for constant improvement in the processes that build and strengthen trust among Wyoming’s voters.
“I am prepared to take swift and decisive action if missteps occur,” Short says, “and am resolute in my commitment to overseeing Wyoming’s elections with great integrity.”
Short believes Wyoming should be the best place in America to start and grow a business, and that means protecting the business-friendly laws—including privacy—that give Wyoming a competitive edge, while also protecting the integrity of the system behind them.
“Most businesses are playing it straight, and they deserve a level playing field and a state reputation they can be proud of,” Short said. “As Secretary of State, I’ll run a professional office with clear rules and fast turnaround, and I’ll strengthen safeguards so our filing system can’t be exploited to mislead people or dodge accountability.”

A Glenrock-built leader, Robert Short studied electrical engineering and computer science at Denver Institute of Technology; he spent the first part of his career in the technology field and later, nuclear science. He returned to Wyoming in 2005, where he and his wife, Janella, raised their family in Douglas while starting and managing several businesses.
