(Lander, WY) – During her quarterly report to the Fremont County Commission on Tuesday, Fremont County Coroner Erin Ivie took time to recognize her staff in advance of Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week Jan. 25–31.
The annual observance – often referred to as “Last Responders Week” – honors the “crucial, often unseen, work of the coroner and staff,” Ivie said, thanking her team for “their selfless dedication to the people of Fremont County at all hours of the day or night – holidays and weekends.”
“Our community can count on the Coroner’s Office being available when needed,” Ivie said. “We do this job not for the recognition, but for the sense of loyalty we feel to our community, and to provide answers and direction to those who are experiencing likely the worst times of their lives.
“We are honored to be here for you.”
Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week “emphasizes the role of this office in providing final answers and dignity in death,” Ivie continued, outlining the reasons the recognition “matters.”
“From a public health perspective, accurate death investigations are crucial for identifying disease outbreaks, environmental hazards, and other public health threats,” she said. “In the name of justice, this office provides essential evidence for criminal investigations and expert court testimony to ensure accuracy and fair trial. For families, we are here to help you find answers and the closure you and your loved ones deserve, understanding that you may need to borrow our strength just to get through the day.”
The observance is supported by U.S. Senate Resolution 532, which “calls on local and state policymakers to recognize, through formal commendation or resolution, the contributions of the local medicolegal death investigative professionals, including coroners, deputy coroners, forensic pathologists, autopsy technicians, and support staff,” Ivie said.
Commissioner Mike Jones asked Ivie to “send our thanks and gratitude to your staff.”
