Wind River showed great improvement against a talented Southeast Goshen team at Pavillion Friday afternoon. The Cougars went toe-to-toe with the tall, experienced Cyclones but fell 44-20 in an entertaining game. The loss drops Wind River to 0-3 on the season while the Cyclones remain unbeaten.
The Cougars set the tone early with senior Mato Amos taking the initial kickoff to the 43-yard line.
Wind River mounted an 11-play, 57-yard drive all on the ground in opening the scoring.
Remington Martinez crashed in from the one and the Cougars had a 6-0 advantage.
It didn’t take Southeast long to move the ball the length of the field. The Cyclones opened in a spread formation with a single back line up next to 6-2 185-pound senior quarterback Ayden Desmond. Southeast gained 57 yards on their first two plays, both motion jet sweeps.
T.J. Moats took the first short toss from Desmond for 33 yards and on the ensuing play Kannon Tippets went the other way in identical fashion for 24.
Moats scored on a one yard run and Beaux Shimic converted the point after for a 7-6 Cyclone lead.
Desmond is a talented athlete. He broke open on a 39-yard quarterback keeper after the fumbled at the Southeast 38 on their second drive and lifted the visitors to a 14-6 lead.
Amos had another excellent kick return and the Cougars marched again, this time capping a nine-play drive on a five-yard Amos run.
Southeast went to the air with Tippets scoring on a five-yard slant with 3:07 left in the opening half. The Cougars stalled on their final drive and the Cyclones hustled with just a single time out remaining to set up a 32-yard field goal by Shimic as time expired.
Southeast scored three unanswered touchdowns in the third and early fourth period to break open the game 44-12. Carter Blevins ran in from the five and Tippets caught passes of 40 and 20 yards from Desmond in the 20 point flurry.
Wind River scored late in the game with just 33 seconds remaining on a five-yard run by Amos with Jeffrey Rushing adding the two-point conversion for the final score.
The Cougars host the 2-1 Wyoming Indian Chiefs on Thursday at 5 pm in their Class 1-A 9-man West Conference opener.
