Today, April 9th, is the inaugural Local News Day, a national day of action and awareness highlighting the importance of local news.
All over the Country, small local news outlets, like County 10, are celebrating in different ways. Why? Because, while local news has changed and is changing, it’s not dead. Despite the decline in traditional print media around the US, over 1,300 newsrooms like County 10 are registered as Partners for Local News Day – and there are a lot more not registered! Check out the map of participating local news organizations.
Despite what people of both Red and Blue might say, we don’t have a political agenda. Our only mission is to connect the community. Most truly local news orgs out there are the same. They’re not interested in how you vote, just that you do. We’re not interested in whether you support a particular new City Ordinance on third reading – just care that you know about it.
The County 10 team spends hours discussing how we can better serve Fremont County. We agonize over big questions like how to cover crime, use of AI, innovative delivery, how to reach young people and engage them at the civic level, and so on.
We’re disappointed when we can’t get to every event. We’re genuinely bummed if we can’t get to your meeting where you’re recognizing someone. Our team loves this community and we believe that if you have the information about what’s going on around you – that we all benefit. If you can make more informed decisions, our community is stronger – if our community is stronger then quality of life improves. That’s the purpose of local news.
In 2025, we published more than 5,000 news stories. We attended three conferences to broaden our horizons and bring that knowledge back to the 10. This year we were invited to an invitation-only conference with the American Press Institute because we’re one of the few local media companies actively trying to engage young people. We’ve brought home awards, expanded coverage, and brought the community closer together by sharing information previously unavailable.
It’s not about us though. It’s about all of you – our community. That’s what local news is about and that’s our mission. Thank you for reading County 10 and Happy Local News Day!
