Central basketball teams got a split at home against Northwest College Wednesday. The men’s team gradually pulled away from the visitors getting up by as many as 21 at one point. The women struggled again and fell to Northwest. For the Lady Trappers, it ended a 12 game losing skid and is their first conference win of the year.
The Rustler women trailed by 4 after one quarter and found themselves down 9 at halftime. They would battle back to take a lead late but couldn’t hold it as Northwest outscored CWC 16 to 15 in the final period to win by 2.
Freshman Essy Latu again led the Rustlers scoring 23 points. Rylee Burmester scored 13 and pulled down 9 rebounds. Tamia Cutignola scored 14 dishing out several assists. The lead changed hands 7 times and was tied 7 times.
Rustler coach Lindsey Fearing felt her team didn’t have the energy or the fight they needed at the start of the game, “I tell them all the time, its not going to be handed to us, we have to play our game and no one is going to bow down to us, regardless of their record.”
The Rustler men had a much different start to this game than on Monday. They would hit five of their first 8 three-pointers in building a 12 point halftime lead. They would extend that to as much as 21 a few different times in the 2nd half and won by 17. Jacob Smith came off the bench and went 6 for 6 from the three-point line scoring 24 points, just two shy of his career high.
Coach Brad Schmit liked the fast start, “we had a really good, intimate meeting yesterday as a team and I asked them what I can do as a coach to get better prepared for games? We came out better tonight and set the tone for the game”
After Smith’s 24, Darius Guinn scored 18, James Woods 15 on a trio of three-pointers. Jerroda Briscoe tallied 10.

Central’s Men are 5 and 6 in league play, and 10 and 16 overall.

Central is 3-8 in league play, and 9-17 overall.

Satrurday, Febuary 16th
CWC will travel to Sheridan for games at 2 and 4 pm.
Sheridan’s men are ranked 6th in the Nation.
