Two minor injuries were reported in a coal train crash near the Wendover Canyon in Wyoming Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred just north of the small community of Wendover, located between Glendo and Guernsey. Two diesel-fueled locomotives wound up overturned in the North Platte River.
Joe Hunter from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality said that approximately 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the waterway. None of the coal being transported reached the river. He said that the Wyoming DEQ will work to clean up the accident and river through the week.
The incident apparently happened because one train rear-ended another. Ultimately three locomotives and four cars derailed. An engineer and a conductor suffered non-life threatening injuries.
