(Fremont County) – On July 18, Lander Search and Rescue shared that 66-year-old Gary Truman had been reported missing/overdue during a solo trip heading to Gannett Peak.
According to the Wyoming DCI Missing Persons page, Truman’s family had last heard from him on July 9.
A press release shared by the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office today, July 21, informs that a body was found by climbers in the Gannett Peak area on Sunday, which is “presumed to be” Truman.
“The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has been actively searching for a missing hiker in the wilderness around Gannett Peak for several days,” the release states. “On Wednesday, July 16th 2025, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a concerned family member of a 66-year-old man from Golden, Colorado that had not returned from a solo expedition to Gannett Peak.”
“Fremont County Search and Rescue began a search operation with assistance from Tip Top Search and Rescue (Sublette County) and Teton County Search and Rescue.”
“On Sunday July 20th 2025, Fremont County Search and Rescue was notified that a body had been discovered by a group of climbers during an ascent of Gannet Peak,” the release continues. “Rescuers have not been able to access the body (which is presumed to be the missing man) due to the elevation and terrain along with high winds hampering helicopter operations. The body is located at around 13,400 feet on a cliff face below the summit of Gannett Peak.”
“An effort to recover the remains will be attempted as soon as weather allows. Further information will be released after the remains are recovered and positively identified.”
