(Fremont County, WY) – An Officer Involved Shooting occurred last night at the Wind River Hotel and Casino south of Riverton. Law Enforcement Officers from the Sheriff’s Office, The Wind River Police Department, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol arrived at the Casino at approximately 7:15 PM in reference to an Agency Assist from an out-of-state Law Enforcement Agency.
Out-of-state authorities had asked for assistance in locating a suspect who had fled their jurisdiction after allegedly committing acts of Domestic Violence, Stalking, and Threats of Violence. The person in question was also listed as a missing person out of the requesting state and cautioned as being both suicidal and homicidal.
Initially, the Wind River Police Department was contacted, however they determined the person in question was not an enrolled member or of Native American descent. The call was then turned over to the Sheriff’s Office with assistance provided by the Wind River Police Department and Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Law Enforcement located the subject in question at the Wind River Casino and made contact with him in a hotel room. Several minutes after the initial contact a confrontation occurred with the subject. Both a Fremont County Deputy Sheriff and a State Trooper with the Wyoming Highway Patrol discharged their firearms.
No citizens or Law Enforcement Officers were injured during the confrontation. Despite life saving measures the suspect died on scene.
The incident is under investigation by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, as is standard protocol with both the Sheriff’s Office and the Wyoming Highway Patrol. The Officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
No further information will be released at this time while the investigation is being conducted.
