All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
(Fremont County, WY) – A 12-person jury has found Riverton man Burdick Seminole Sr. guilty of first degree murder, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, and causing death with a firearm during a crime of violence, according to federal court filings.
The verdict was given following the culmination of a four-day jury trial on Friday, November 15, overseen by the Honorable Judge Scott W. Skavdahl in Casper.
A sentencing hearing has been set for February 6, 2025.
Seminole faced these charges in relation to the August 8, 2023 murder of Michael Standing Elk.
Original court documents state that Seminole entered Standing Elk’s residence in Saint Stephens on that date, and the two engaged in a confrontation that ultimately led to the wheelchair-bound Standing Elk sustaining a fatal gunshot wound delivered by Seminole.
Seminole initially attempted to rely on the insanity defense, but was deemed competent to proceed back in April.
Seminole’s jury trial was originally set for June, but was reset for November 12 following the acceptance of an ends of justice continuance motion in May. His sentencing hearing is now scheduled to take place on February 6, 2025.
