(Wyoming) – Stephen Tucker loves telling stories about Wyoming’s rich history. The Sheridan-based filmmaker has done everything from full blown documentaries, to capturing local weddings and shooting promotional videos for companies that hire his expertise.
One of those promotional shoots was for the Johnson County Tourism Association. Tucker’s Big Horn Films was tasked with short videos highlighting the wild west history of the Kaycee, Wyoming area. After going on a tour of the historic “Hole in the Wall” with historian Clay Gibbons of Worland, Tucker said he knew this project was going to turn into more.
“We started down this road, the more we learned, the more we were like this is just incredible history,” Tucker told us. “We interviewed many different people who have incredible history connected to these outlaws. Hearing some of theses stories, it was like, I want to learn more.”
Stephen said with all of the content they gathered, there was no possible way to boil it down to just a five minute highlight piece and respectfully tell the full story. He told the tourism group he’d still put those short videos together, but also wanted to devote his own personal time into producing a full feature film.
Today the Hole In The Wall area, southwest of Kaycee, is best known for its outlaw lore. Where notorious criminals like Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch would disappear into a red rock natural fortress. The remote area of red sandstone cliffs is both naturally beautiful and steeped in 1800’s history.
‘Hole in the Wall’ is screening at several film events in the western United States this year. Tucker recently joined County 10 to tell us more about the project, fun history he learned along the way and an opportunity to see the film this fall in Lander.
