At the March 19th Riverton City Council meeting, the council and Mayor Rich Gard unanimously voted to approve legal firework use in the city of Riverton for both the 4th of July and New Year’s Eve.
Firework use will be allowed from 5:00 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. on December 31st. They’ll be allowed from 6:00 p.m. – 11:45 p.m. on the 4th of July.
At the meeting, Councilman Mike Bailey inquired as to why the time frame differed on the two days. City Administrator Tony Tolstedt explained that there would be less daylight in December, thus the earlier start time. He also explained that most would prefer to celebrate at midnight on New Year’s Eve, so fireworks are legal until 12:30 a.m.
Riverton previously prohibited firework usage in city limits on these days, typically citing fire danger and trash created as the two biggest concerns.
Firework usage on school campuses and city buildings will not be allowed. The council also noted that those using fireworks will be required to clean up after themselves or they could face a penalty.
