(Wyoming) – Former United States Vice President and Wyoming-native, Dick Cheney passed away at 84 his family announced early Tuesday.
Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and grew up in Casper, Wyoming. He attended both Yale University and the University of Wyoming. His political career began as an intern for Congressman William Steiger. Eventually, Cheney worked in the White House for both the Nixon and Ford administrations. He was White House Chief of Staff from 1975-1977 and then was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978.
In 1989, he was appointed as the Secretary of Defense during the George H.W. Bush administration. In July 2000, Dick was chosen by George W. Bush as his running mate. Together, they defeated their Democratic opponents Al Gore and Joe Lieberman. In 2004, Bush and Cheney were elected to their second term.
Fox News obtained a statement from Cheney’s family regarding his passing that read, “Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed, The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.
“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States,” the statement continued. Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”
