(Dallas, TX) – Former Riverton High School multi-athlete star, Naya Shime has been a force on the volleyball court for Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas the last two seasons.
Last season, Shime recorded 300 kills, 215 digs, 84 blocks and 15 service aces. She’s on pace to out-do those numbers this season as a captain for her Mustangs.
SMU entered the weekend ranked 15th in the country with a 12-4 record (5-1 in the ACC.) The top rated team in the nation, Pittsburgh visited SMU Saturday. In a five-set thriller, the Mustangs pulled off the upset, winning 19-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-23, and 15-9. The SMU victory gave Pitt their first loss of the season.
Naya was the statistical leader in the big upset with a season-high 20 kills and 6 digs. SMU volleyball will certainly improve upon their #15 ranking this week and look to keep it going by hosting Stanford next Saturday. Subscribers to the ACC Network can watch Naya in action against the Cardinal.
Shime is the 2020 winner of the Milward Simpson Award, honoring the most outstanding female athlete of the year in Wyoming high school sports. She was enrolled for three years at the University of Wyoming, before transferring to SMU.
