(Lander, WY) – Fremont County Coroner Erin Ivie offered a monthly update from her office during a Fremont County Commission meeting this week.
So far this year, Ivie said her office has responded to 141 cases – 21 more than last year at this time.
“Our cooler is currently full, and it is a possibility that we may have to start reaching out to funeral homes for use of cooler and storage,” she said. “We’re hoping not to use that option, but we are running out of space, (and) this is the second time this year that we have been full.”
Accidental deaths are at 32 for the year – two more than last year at this time, Ivie said, and there have been 11 suicides so far this year compared to seven at the same time last year.
“Our homicide numbers for this year so far are seven, compared to three for the entirety of 2023,” she said. “Vehicular deaths are at six so far this year compared to 12 last year, (and) drugs and/or alcohol continue to be a contributing factor.”
For autopsies, she said 29 have been completed so far this year for Fremont County and 32 have been completed for contracting counties.
About $58,600 has been collected in payment so far for those contracted “autopsy services,” Ivie said, and $5,852 has been billed for payment, with “six cases that are still awaiting their completion before we send them a bill.”
There was one unclaimed burial this year at the Fremont County cemetery.
