(Lander, WY) – Local search and rescue crews have conducted 10 missions so far in 2025, Fremont County Sheriff Ryan Lee reported this week, commending the volunteers for their dedication to their work.
“We are extremely fortunate to have the volunteers that we have in this county,” Lee told the Fremont County Commission during a regular meeting Tuesday, mentioning search and rescue as well as local firefighters and volunteer first responders. “This county would come to a standstill with respect to public safety and emergency services without (them). It’s unbelievable.”
Search and rescue crews had conducted six missions by this time last year, Lee noted.
Law enforcement personnel have been “very busy” this summer too, he continued, with the Fremont County Dispatch Center sending out emergency services 2,450 times, including 1,600 law enforcement calls, 650 ambulance calls, and 155 fire calls.
So far this year, Lee said his agency has responded to 4,550 calls for service, and “we are experiencing above average calls (in) the incorporated areas around Riverton, specifically to include the Gardens North area.”
“We’ve had a significant increase in criminal mischief and activity in that area,” Lee said. “We are providing extra patrols in that area and doing what we can to curb some of the criminal activity … with respect to domestic violence incidents, disorderly conduct, intoxicated persons, weapons offenses, and so forth. We take quite a few calls out there every single day.”
Inmate population
There are currently 163 inmates being housed at the Fremont County Detention Center, Lee said, including 109 men, 49 women, and five juveniles.
One person is also being held at the Wyoming State Hospital in Evanston, Lee said, and another is being housed at the Hot Springs County Jail free of charge.
Over the last 38 days, Lee said 654 people have been booked into the Fremont County Jail, including 346 from the Riverton Police Department, 188 from the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, 70 from the Lander Police Department, 44 from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, two from the U.S. Marshal, two from the Shoshoni Police Department, and two from the Dubois Police Department.
The current inmate population includes 48 people who have already been sentenced – 36 men and 12 women – and 117 pre-trial detainees, of whom 46 percent are facing felony charges in District Court, 50 percent came from the Riverton Circuit Court, and 4 percent came from Lander Circuit Court.
