(Lander, WY) – Fremont County Sheriff Ryan Lee presented a year-end update to the Fremont County Commission this week.
Below is a breakdown of some of the data discussed.
Calls for service
In 2025, the FCSO handled more than 7,000 calls for service, Lee said – up roughly 500 from the previous year.
“Most of those calls originate out of the Riverton area at 4,160,” he reported. “Lander is about half that at 2,034, with the upper country, Dubois, bringing in 543 and then primarily agency assist for crimes that we’re investigating on the reservation that pertain to the Sheriff’s office at 207 calls.”
The FCSO also issued 759 citations in 2025 – “about average,” Lee said – including 89 drunken driving arrests – up from 61 in 2024.
Jail intakes
Total jail intakes also rose in 2025, by approximately 200 over the previous year, Lee said, reaching 2,951 bookings.
Most of those bookings came from the Riverton Police Department, at 46 percent (1,368 inmates), he said, while 32 percent came from the FCSO, 14 percent came from the Lander Police Department, 6 percent came from the Wyoming HIghway Patrol, 1 percent came from the Shoshoni Police Department and less than 1 percent came from federal holds and the Dubois Police Department.
The average daily population remains approximately 135 inmates, Lee noted – “significantly lower than we’ve seen in the past years.”
Top booked offenses for 2025 were:
- Failure to appear for court (1,231 bookings)
- Public intoxication (530 — municipal ordinance violations)
- Driving under the influence
- Controlled substance possession
Lee’s report also included an update on current detention center totals.
As of last Friday, he said the Fremont County Detention Center housed 122 inmates, with 123 individuals in custody.
The population included 95 men, 24 women, two juveniles, one person housed at the state hospital, and no inmates on home confinement, furlough, or housed in out-of-county jails
Over the past 67 days, the facility recorded 481 bookings, Lee said, including:
- 229 from the RPD
- 141 from the FCSO
- 81 from the LPD
- 15 from the WHP
- 5 each from the U.S. Marshals, SPD, and DPD
As of last Friday, 35 inmates were sentenced (28 men, 7 women), Lee said, and the jail’s pre-adjudication population stands at 88, with 61 percent of those cases originating in District Court, 30 percent from Riverton Circuit Court, and 9 percent from Lander Circuit Court.
Gardens North, K-9 updates
Lee added that the FCSO continues monitoring issues at the Gardens North subdivision just outside of Riverton.
Since trespassing signage has been installed on abandoned units in the neighborhood, Lee said deputies have had to enforce trespassing and vagrancy laws on only one occasion at Gardens North – but “we’re currently still having issues out there” involving “one or two separate residents.”
“The problem hasn’t totally gone away,” he said. “We actively are out there and we’re picking up people on warrants and getting them out of the area, (and we’re) still responding to calls and people just causing disturbances out there.”
He also noted that two new K-9 units that were acquired with support from the local opioid settlement fund have completed training in Arkansas and are now in service.
One of the K-9 vehicle units is in service too, Lee said, while the other “is being manufactured as we speak.”
“Things are working very well,” Lee said. “It’s a good asset to Fremont County.”
