Fremont County Sheriff says inmate totals are ‘lower than they have been’

(Lander, WY) – Fremont County Sheriff Ryan Lee gave his monthly report to the Fremont County Commission on Tuesday.

As of Nov. 18, he said the inmate population at the Fremont County Detention Center totaled 147 – including 20 people who were booked over the weekend.

“Our numbers are statistically lower than they have been, which is a good thing,” Lee said. 

The in-house total includes 99 men, 47 women, and one juvenile, Lee said, and there is also one adult male in custody at the Wyoming State Hospital.

Fifty-one of the inmates have already been sentenced, he said, including 37 men and 14 women, while 76 are “pre-adjudicated” or being detained “on bond” while “awaiting some sort of movement with their case.”

Of those pre-adjudicated cases, Lee said 46 percent came out of Riverton Circuit Court, 44 percent came out of District Court charged with felonies, and 10 percent came from Lander Circuit Court.

Bookings over the last 28 days totaled 180 inmates, Lee said, including 86 from the Riverton Police Department, 41 each from the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and the Lander Police Department, seven from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, four from the U.S. Marshals Service, and one from the Shoshoni Police Department.

The FCSO has taken roughly 6,055 calls for service so far this year, Lee said, and “our investigators continue to remain busy with a multitude of cases countywide.”

For Fremont County Search and Rescue, Lee said the load was lower this year, with a total of 15 missions undertaken since July compared to 23 at the same time last year. 

“Our Search and Rescue folks haven’t been all that busy, which is a good thing,” Lee said. “We have not had any complex missions that we’ve had to deal with. (We had) a few major ones, but nothing very complex.”
