Hey Fremont County, it’s me Shane from Gamble’s in Lander.
It’s that time of year when I spend a lot of time reflecting on the year and on family. I have a child that went off to college this last year. Sending him off and then having him back at Thanksgiving really impacted me.
Our families and the family that is our larger local community are what makes us who we are. Yeah, I know that’s a little heavy, but Christmas is a time for nostalgia and a little heavy thinking, so I don’t think I’m too crazy to dwell on it a bit. Each of us impacts everyone else…
Your smile at the guy next to you at the stop light…
The door you held open…
That fundraiser you went to…
That car you jumped for someone on the side of the road…
Local school activities…
Dinner around the table with family…
The elderly person you visited at the nursing home…
Christmas carols sung by school kids…
Shopping at a store owned by a neighbor…
Your attendance at a Board or Council meeting – your vote in November…
…all this and so much more makes us who we are as Fremont County. You, your family, your friends, our organizations and businesses. “Us,” that’s what’s special about this place. Together, we are why we cherish it as “home.”
This Christmas and New Year, I am remembering what really matters and I am so thankful and encouraged by what I see around me. Not to wear rose colored glasses or anything, we all have some areas of personal and communal growth we could work on, but if we do it together, we can make our community better.
This Holiday season, whatever you’re celebrating, let’s celebrate “us” in the middle of it. You may not agree with your neighbor on everything, but I hope you can agree with me that we all matter. We’re all important.
