Credit card skimmer fraud is rapidly increasing at gas pumps and ATM’s. In 2017, the number of compromised devises rose 8% nationwide, in the first half of 2018, it was up 10%.
Overall, the United States ranks third in the world in credit card fraud, behind only Mexico and Brazil.
Luckily, there are a variety of small steps you can take to prevent thieves from stealing your information:
- Damage to the credit card reader. If it’s loose or broken or taped together, ask an employee to assist you.
- Thieves usually choose their targets out of sight, use the closest pump to the cashier or ATM’s in a well-lit area.
- Make sure no-one is watching you enter your pin, or recording you on a device
- Before filling up, check your phone to see if numbers are trying to connect to Bluetooth. Some of the devices need Bluetooth signals to gain data.
- If anything seems out-of-place pay in cash or ask an attendant for help
