(Fremont County, WY) – Wyoming PBS will premiere a captivating new documentary, “Headwinds: Bikepacking the Red Desert,” at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5. The 30-minute film takes viewers on an unforgettable bikepacking adventure through the stunning Red Desert, one of Wyoming’s most unique and remote landscapes.
The documentary follows a group of friends as they embark on a challenging and awe-inspiring journey through the desert’s rugged terrain, which stretches across Sweetwater County, Fremont County, and a small corner of Sublette County.
“As they travel, they learn about the landscape and the history of the area,” says film director BJ Klophaus. “At its heart, the film is really about going outside in Wyoming and exploring new places with friends.”
In addition to showcasing the riders’ experiences, “Headwinds” features insights from local experts who share the area’s fascinating history and geology. Viewers will learn about the ancient formations that define the desert and the environmental forces that have shaped its distinctive landscape.
“This film provides a great opportunity to learn more about this part of Wyoming and hopefully inspires viewers to go discover it for themselves,” says Klophaus. “My biggest takeaway in doing this film is that for how vast the Red Desert is, it still feels accessible to go out and explore. Just be sure to avoid the mud season.”
Klophaus is a producer at Wyoming PBS who loves telling stories about adventures.
“The opportunity to film a group of friends exploring the Red Desert on a bike-powered journey really appealed to me,” he explains. “But I also wanted to show that the Red Desert is a place where a lot of worlds collide. Whether you’re a cyclist, a hunter, or an ATV-er, you can go there and experience the geology, history, or whatever excites you.”
“Headwinds: Bikepacking the Red Desert” is funded in part by Sweetwater County Travel & Tourism and the Wyoming Public Television Production Endowment. After the broadcast premiere, the film will be available to view on the Wyoming PBS YouTube channel, website, and PBS App.
