The Shane Shatto Wrestling Tournament had a big change this year, with the boys wrestling in Douglas, and the girls at the “Rumble at the Rock” in Glenrock. The Wind River girls had an outstanding tournament, finishing third as a team in a huge field of 28 teams from Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, and Nebraska.
Individually, the Lady Wolverines of Riverton High School had two champions: Hailee Cooper pinned Cheri Warner of Chadron, Nebraska, in the 100-pound championship, and Aleah Marquez took gold at 235 over Cathryn Reimer of Torrington with a pin at 1:19.
Wind River’s Lily Hill won the 120-pound weight class with a 2:34 pin in the second period over Malaya Gross of Douglas.
Teammate Olivia Remacle was second at 130 pounds, dropping a close 3-1 decision to Valeria Arellano of Scottsbluff in the finals.
Lander’s Elizabeth Gribowskas won at 155 pounds with a 12-6 decision over Jayce Turbiville of Harding County.
Shoshoni had a pair of second-place finishers with Payton Arnhold runner-up at 105 pounds against Ellie Bouzis of Gillette and Brueklyn Truempler second to Rowena-Ortega-Hand of Thunder Basin at 140.
Lander’s Harlie Velarde went the distance at 170 pounds but fell to Wheatland’s Sophie Meyer in the championship match by major decision 11-3.
