(Lander, WY) – Lander Mayor Missy White affirmed the appointment of Kelly Waugh as Lander Police Department Chief during a Lander City Council meeting last week.
Waugh has been an LPD Captain in since January 2024, and White said retiring LPD Chief Scott Peters recommended him for the interim position.
Regardless, White said she did her “due diligence” before affirming the appointment, contacting Waugh’s previous employers to ask about his work history.
“They had great things to say,” White said. “Some of the notable comments (were) being a strong leader and supervisor, being very mission-focus, worked hard to achieve goals of the department, holds people accountable and is very focused on making sure that things continue to progress. …
“So I’m pleased with being able to make this nomination.”
Councilmember Julia Stuble said she’ll be “glad” to have “continuity in the direction and vision” of the LPD with Waugh as Interim Chief.
“I’m grateful we’ll be in good hands with his leadership of the department,” she wrote in a Facebook post last week.
Before Waugh was sworn in, Councilmember Melinda Cox asked about the process for hiring a permanent LPD chief.
White said she couldn’t offer “a whole lot of details” about that, but “it will be an open position,” and if Waugh isn’t selected, he will have the opportunity to return to his previous position as LPD Captain.
