Bill Moss was born January 5, 1951 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He grew up in Pahokee, a farm town on Lake Okeechobee surrounded by many cousins, family, friends, and his siblings Larry and Pam in the Pahokee area.
He went to Pine Crest High School in Ft. Lauderdale, graduating in 1969. He was a great athlete, lettering in football, basketball, track & field and named to their Athletic Hall of Fame.
Bill attended Palm Beach Jr. College for 1 year. He served as a Ft. Lauderdale Beach life guard for several years. He was on duty in the winter of 1977 when it snowed on the beach! Bill enjoyed building things in his youth, and decided to train as a carpenter’s apprentice. He worked on many building projects in the Ft. Lauderdale area. Upon completion of his program, Bill worked construction until he felt the call to move west. He signed up for a NOLS course in1977 and moved to Wyoming. He found his true home in Lander and the Wind River Range.
Bill married Lisa Anderson on August 21st, 1982 in Holyoke, Colorado. They began their adventure-life revolving around horses, camping, fishing, hunting, outfitting, roping, and enjoying God’s creation, particularly in the Wind River and Absaroka Ranges of Wyoming. He became the proud father of a son Justin Moss in 1983. Daughter Jaime Moss was in 1988. Bill loved getting his family on horses, packing camping gear into panniers, and leading them back into remote wilderness areas. He modeled enthusiasm for adventure in God’s creation, his passion to serve God, and a strong work ethic throughout his life. Bill supported the many activities of Justin and Jaime, encouraging them in their successes, endeavors, and challenges. He adored his 3 grandchildren, Reifel, Tilli and Jent.
In 2021 Bill gave away his last horse and bought a motorcycle. One trip took him to the border of Canada through Glacier and back home. He would have gone in to Canada but discovered he had left his passport at home.
Bill was a general contractor, owning and running his own business Moss Construction for over 40 years. His main focus was log home construction building in the Lander, Pinedale, and Dubois areas.
Bill and his partners outfitted in the Winds, Absarokas, and South Pass area for several years. He led hunting and fishing clients as well as doing drop packs for those seeking faster ways into the remote areas of the Winds. One of his great prides was successfully packing a wedding party, bridal gown and multitiered wedding cake back into the Dunoir. He looked forward to hunting seasons as an outfitter and personally.
Bill was a Christian, professing Christ as his savior. He attended the E Free and Foursquare churches, 1984-2003. The Lander Covenant Presbyterian Church became his church home in 2004 until his passing. He served as an elder, and taught children and adult Sunday school and led multiple Bible studies. CPC supports many ministries including Fathers in the Field, a national outdoor ministry to fatherless boys. Bill was among the ministry’s first mentors. He passionately served and pursued God. He was a veracious reader of the Bible, history, theology, and philosophy. In a conversation recently, with a nurse who asked about his faith he said, “I know my God. I love Jesus. I am a sinner. I have lived a huge life and am grateful and thankful.” Click here to continue reading…
