It is with broken hearts and beautiful memories the family of Irma Joy Manning Spencer announces her sudden passing, February 9, 2026, at her home in Great Falls, Montana. She was 67 years old.
Joy was born March 3, 1958, in Thermopolis, Wyo. to Dick and Marcella Manning. She grew up in Lander, Wyo. alongside her siblings Bobbi and Linda Manning, also, Sandy, Tommy and Mike Burtch. She started school at South Elementary and graduated from Lander Valley High School in 1975.
In 1978 Joy married Mike Potter in Lander Wy., and soon after the couple made their home in Great Falls, Montana. Together they welcomed 3 children, Amanda, Jeff and Paul. Joy was the heart of the family, known for strength, generosity, and unwavering love for her children and later, grandchildren: Kara, Tru, Dre, Bo, Jax, Justin, Kai, and Great Grandchild, Ramsis. She loved them all with every beat of her heart. In 1999, she began a new chapter in her life marrying Tim Spencer, with whom she spent several years.
Joy had many interests, but gardening was one of her greatest passions. She could grow just about anything, which inspired her to start and operate her own gardening business for many years. A dedicated and hardworking woman.
She faced life’s challenges with faith, strength, and her wonderful sense of humor. Joy loved spending time outdoors, especially camping and fishing with her family.
A visit to Joy’s home was always memorable. You could count on playing games, listening to music, talking about history as well as recent events, and laughing until your sides hurt. We all knew to avoid politics as well as allow extra time for her to get anywhere because of her terrible sense of direction. She was so directionally challenged; we substituted ‘your side’ and ‘my side’ for ‘right’ and ‘left’ when navigating. Going anywhere with her was definitely enjoyable.
