Joseph Cones, 88, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born on August 17, 1937, in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, Joseph lived a long and meaningful life marked by service, dedication to his community, and deep love for his family.
Joseph began his career as a reservation policeman, where he served with integrity and commitment. His path later led him to become a tribal lawyer—roles through which he contributed significantly to the well-being and justice of his community. Even after retirement, Joseph remained active and engaged; he found great joy in working outdoors and took pride in maintaining beautiful yards.
He was a man of many interests. Joseph enjoyed golf, reading, walking, and visiting yard sales. He had a gift for conversation and delighted in talking with anyone he met. His intelligence and wit made him a memorable presence wherever he went. He especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren—whether traveling or camping together—and these moments brought him immense happiness.
Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Albertine Cones; his son Mitchell Cones; and his nephew Robert Thomas.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Margaret Demaree and her husband Stephen Demaree; his son Joe Cones Jr. and wife Laura Cones; grandchildren Devin Cones; Jasmine, Kaynon, and Koda Demaree; Vandileigh, Kerstoph, Wander, and Devine Cones; great-granddaughters Akora and Everly Cones; nephew Jordan Dresser; nieces Kateri, Sami, Menyan, Laura, Crystal, and Dallas; as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Joseph’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with kindness and wisdom. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
