Linda Barton, a beloved figure in the Lander community, passed away on May 24, 2026, at the age of 76.
Linda was born on July 15, 1949, in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Irving and Myra Katzer. She attended California State University, Northridge, earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology. Later in life, she also earned a master’s degree in organizational management. Although Linda was a big-city girl at heart, having lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Boston, she moved to Lander with her two children in 1999 to be with Mike Barton and his family. Linda and Mike married in 2000, and she rapidly became an indispensable part of the Barton clan. Despite making Lander her home, California always had a special place in her heart, and she visited regularly.
Linda was known for her gregarious nature, big smile, and ability to build community anywhere she went. A generous host and social butterfly, she quickly became a recognizable figure in Lander, and outings in town inevitably involved unplanned chats with friends and acquaintances. She was as adept at cultivating plants as she was at cultivating relationships, and found great joy in spending time in her garden with her dogs. Linda was delighted when her first grandchild, Charlotte, was born and was always quick to share photos and stories of her.
Upon arriving in Wyoming, Linda immediately became a force for good in Lander, Fremont County, and the state. She was a fierce advocate for education and voting rights and received state-wide recognition for her professional and volunteer service. She touched countless lives, both directly and indirectly, through her dedication and diligence. Among her many contributions are directing the Lights On in Lander afterschool program, serving on the Lander City Council, founding and directing the Wyoming Afterschool Alliance, serving on the Fremont County District #1 School Board, chairing the Fremont County Democratic Party, founding and chairing the League of Women Voters of Fremont County, and being elected president of the League of Women Voters of Wyoming.
Linda is survived by her husband, Mike Barton; children, Jonathan Carris (Angel), Allison Carris; step-children Drew, Erica, and Haley Barton; granddaughter Charlotte Carris; brother Sheldon Katzer (Jerri); sister-in-law Debra Katzer; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jeff Katzer.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 7, at 12:00 p.m. at the Lander Community Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Linda’s name to the Fremont County League of Women Voters or Lights On in Lander.
